Reading and Phonics

Reading

Each child will be given one banded reading book and a reading diary to take home; these books are closely matched to the sounds your child already knows.  The books we are using for this come from our Rocket Phonics scheme and will support your child's reading journey.  The book and diary are to be taken home and brought back to school every day. When children have read with an adult at home, please can an adult write in their reading record with the date, book title and any comments about their reading. When reading with your child, please try to ask them questions about the book they have read, as comprehension skills are very important. Your child’s book will be changed once they can read the whole book fluently (we often say it needs to sound like they are talking) and shown a solid understanding. Please encourage your children to read a wide breadth of books; not only their reading book from school.

You can ask the following questions when reading with your child;

  • Where is the story set?
  • When did the story take place?
  • Who are the main characters?
  • What does the main character look like?
  • Where does the main character live?
  • How does the story begin?
  • What is happening?
  • What happened at the end of the story?
  • Who is telling the story?
  • Which parts of the story do you like best?
  • Which parts of the story describe the setting?
  • What is the problem faced by the character?

Phonics

Rocket Phonics Next Steps continues the Rocket Phonics journey for our children in Year 2, consolidating phonics and developing key literacy skills by:

  • building in National Curriculum requirements for Year 2 to ensure children meet and exceed age-related expectations
  • introducing and gradually developing cursive handwriting to support children in becoming confident writers
  • equipping children with essential literacy skills for the wider curriculum and the transition to Key Stage 2 with a focus on phonics for spelling and writing

  • using exciting fiction and non-fiction reading books to widen vocabulary and nurture a  love of reading
